Hello again after a long break!   Today, we have grown into a big family with 17 producers in 2025. Our annual saffron production capacity has reached approximately 4.5 kg. We are still at the beginning of the journey, but we have gained very valuable experience along the way.

Economic and Efficient Production Methods

At the end of the first year, we adopted a more economical model: harvesting saffron indoors while growing corms outdoors. This significantly reduced room setup and operating costs. Of course, with the advantages came one drawback: the need for open space to grow corms. However, this is not a traditional field; it is a special ground we developed with our own plant mixture, allowing the corms to benefit from sunlight and grow without electricity costs.

At Safbox, we continue to grow corms indoors, but due to its cost-effectiveness, we recommend the outdoor method to our producer families. Today, all 17 of our producers are applying this model.

Challenges in the Drying Process

After nearly two years, we realized that the most challenging stage for our producers is the drying process. Saffron must be dried under specific temperature and humidity conditions. Drying in a non-humid environment makes saffron brittle and reduces its crocin values.

This year, we harvested both from the field and through indoor vertical farming. Our analysis results showed about a 65-unit crocin difference between field saffron and saffron grown indoors. The values of saffron cultivated in controlled environments were much higher. We shared these results as a pop-up on our website at launch. For those who had doubts about vertical farming, this data has been quite enlightening.

An Economic and High-Income Model

This production model, which combines indoor and outdoor methods, has become not only economical but also a high-income business model. Compared to field saffron, it delivers better values, provides both saffron and corms each year, requires lower labor costs for harvesting, and produces larger, heavier corms—making indoor production highly advantageous.

Unfortunately, due to insufficient saffron corm supply in our country and rapidly increasing demand, corm prices rise significantly each year. Yet despite these challenges, saffron remains a profitable and—contrary to common belief—effortless business model that will continue to hold importance for farmers for many years.

The Benefits of Saffron

Saffron stands out not only for its flavor but also for its health benefits. Thanks to its antioxidants, it strengthens the immune system. It is also known to have mood-enhancing effects. For those who value healthy living, saffron emerges as a natural choice.

Remember, to fully benefit from saffron’s properties, it is important to choose high-quality and natural products. At Safbox, we aim to improve people’s quality of life with natural and organic saffron products.

Stay well…
